Wimbledon; Novak Djokovic advances to third round with Stan Wawrinka getting ousted

Novak Djokovic, who is bidding for his 5th title of Wimbledon, is on the right track as he advances to the third round with victory over Denis Kudla.

Defending champion, Djokovic arrived for his match on Center Court a little later which followed the Kyle Edmund’s loss against Fernando Verdasco. However, after this late arrival, Djokovic made short work of his opponent as he won over the match by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3 in a match that was 93 minutes long.

15 times Grand Slam champion was broken two times but hit 33 winners on his way to win to set up the 3rd round match against the 22 years old player Hubert Hurkacz.

However, Stan Wawrinka was not that much lucky in his 2nd round match against Reilly Opelka as he lost his 73 minutes long match by 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4 and 8-6.

Opelka was another debutant at the Wimbledon this year but Wawrinka has played ever Wimbledon tournament since 2005.

This loss of Wawrinka in the tournament is another major one among the seeded players after the first round losses of players like Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Wawrinka said, “I had some chances but my start was a little slow. I was also a bit hesitating and not moved really well. At the end, Reilly went for it. He went bigger than me and he really deserved this win.”

With this win, Opelka now plays his 3rd round match against Milos Raonic who defeated Netherland’s Robin Haase by 7-6, 7-5, and 7-6.

As for Kevin Anderson, the finalist of last year and the 4th seeded in the tournament, who already missed the entire clay court season with his elbow injury, won his match against Janko Tipsarević by 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 and 6-4.
