Brisbane Heat 172 (McSweeney 73, Sams 5-30) beat Sydney Thunder 157 for 9 (Bancroft 46, Bartlett 3-29) by 15 runs

Brisbane Heat managed to defeat the Sydney Thunder by 15 runs despite a collapse and a remarkable bowling performance by Daniel Sams, remaining undefeated in the Big Bash League.

The home team initially had a strong start at the Gabba, led by Nathan McSweeney’s impressive innings of 73 off 52, but then lost 7 wickets for just 16 runs, ending their innings at 172 all out. Sams took four wickets in the final over, finishing with a career-best 5 for 30, earning Thunder’s first five-wicket haul.

Cameron Bancroft’s 46 off 39 was driving the Thunder’s chase, but he was dismissed in the decisive 14th over by Xavier Bartlett, who finished with figures of 3-29.

The Thunder’s hope was kept alive by Ollie Davies, who almost got out early in his innings but went on to play a crucial role. However, the Heat’s Matthew Kuhnemann and Sams were able to take key wickets to secure the victory for Brisbane.

With this win, the Heat moved to the top of the ladder with four wins and one no result, while the Thunder slipped to a 1-3 record.

Earlier in the match, the Heat were on course for a high total, with McSweeney and Josh Brown (39 off 29) combining for a partnership of 106 runs. However, Sams’ bowling changes disrupted the Heat’s momentum, leading to a dramatic collapse in the latter part of their innings.

Sams had an exceptional performance with the ball, getting key wickets and causing difficulty for the Heat’s lower order. The Thunder’s innings also faced challenges against Brisbane’s spinners, resulting in a period without boundaries and the eventual loss of wickets.
