While the defenseman of Blues Carl Gunnarsson has no link to Bruins Hall of Famer Bobby Orr, he still displayed a performance similar to him.
Bob Plager, the former player of the Blues said, “He has the same number 4 jersey and he made the same winning overtime goal in the very same building.”
Gunnarsson, who is not known in the team for his offense scored the goal which was his first in the playoffs with 3:15 into the OT that allowed St Louis Blues to win over the Boston Bruins by 2-1. This is the first Stanley Cup final win for the St. Louis Blues in their last 52 years of franchise history.
The last final overtime that these two teams had was back in 1970 when Orr scored a goal which was made famous only after he flew across the crease like Superman to complete his sweep.
Plager said, “There are still fans from that year who still go to games. They always say, ‘Before I Die’. I hoped we could do something for them.”
The best of seven series between the two teams for the Stanly Cup is now tied at 1-1 as the game now heads for game 3 and game 4 to St. Louis to be played on Saturday and Monday respectively.
Charlie Coyle, Centre of Bruins said, “Blues came harder in this game as compared to last time. They had the speed and they hit hard and were all over the puck.”
Bruins had to also play most part of the game without their star defenseman Matt Grzelcyk who got severely injured following a brutal hit from Oskar Sundqvist during the 1st period.
He had to be taken off the field and driven to the hospital for getting evaluated.
