With Rohit Sharma leading the Indian team in the ICC World Cup first clash between India and Pakistan, scored his 2nd century of the world cup to hand India their 89-run victory over Pakistan.
In front of the sold-out crowd cheering for the Indian team in Manchester, Sharma scored his ODI career’s 24th century and was extremely poised and destructive as he managed to reach the mark of 100 runs by hitting 14 fours along with 3 sixes. His final score was 140 runs off of 113 balls.
The opening standing from India was a record one for a World cup match between India and Pakistan as KL Rahul scored 57 runs and Virat Kohli scored 77 runs for a partnership stand of 136 runs. Virat Kohli has now become the fastest player to have reached the mark of making 11000 ODI runs during his innings.
Indian team set a massive chase target of 337 runs for a Pakistani team but their opener Imam Ul Haq’s wicket fell at mere 7 runs to the first ever World Cup delivery from India’s Vijay Shankar.
Afterwards, Fakhar Zaman’s wicket fell as he made 62 runs as he shared a 104-run 2nd-wicket partnership with Babar Azam who scored 48 runs.
Unfortunately, both of these players’ wickets fell on the deliveries of the Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav in consecutive overs. More dread came for Pakistani team as Hardik Pandya removed Mohammed Hafiz and Shoaib Malik in his successive deliveries. Within a few overs, Pakistani team fell from being 117-1 to 129-5.
Even the Pakistani team’s captain Sarfraz Ahmad was not able to pull back his team after he got bowled out on delivery by Shankar after making 12 runs. The match at that point had to be delayed as the rain returned once more. After the match resumed, Pakistani closed out at 212-6 from 40 overs.
With this win, India now has 7 points and now ranks third on the points table while Pakistan with its 3rd loss in last 5 games stands at the ninth place.
