David Warner scored a stunning century at the match of Australia VS South Africa but it was still not enough to ensure his side’s victory. With these results, Australia will now be facing England for their semifinals match.
Australia was at 119-4 as Usman Khawaja; their fifth batsmen suffered an injury and had to retire while Australia chased a target of 326 runs at the venue of Old Trafford. Australia got his hopes up for winning the match after David Warner scored 122 runs off of 117 balls.
This was Warner’s third century of this tournament but after that, he ultimately fell to a one-handed catch out made by Chris Morris. After Warner getting ousted off the pitch, the Proteas made short work of the remaining batting order to retire them out of the match at the score of 315 runs to win by 10 runs.
With the win of South Africa, Australia has now finished behind India, who earlier defeated Sri Lanka, on the world cup points table and will have to play against the 3rd placed England for the semifinals match that will be held at Edgbaston.
After the Proteas won the toss and their captain Faf du Plessis chose to bat first, they sent in Aiden Markram to open their batting inning instead of Hashim Amla who suffered an injury earlier during his football warm-up.
South Africa seemed to be highly motivated for this win from the get-go as Markram and Quinton de Kock shared the opening stand for a 79-run partnership.
Markram was able to score the first six of the match on delivery by Nathan Lyon all the while making a score of 34 runs off of 37 balls but then fell to the spinner’s bowling shortly after.
De Kock who scored 52 runs off of 51 balls also fell to the delivery of Lyon.
JP Duminy was making his final appearance in the ODI career form Proteas’ side but his wicket fell with him scoring 14 runs. And as for van der Dussen, he scored 95 runs and was hoping to score the first century of his ODI career but fell short on his attempt to score a six on the last delivery of the allotted 50 over.
