Cori Gauff, the American teenage sensation was not able to replicate her performance form the Wimbledon’s women’s draw as she lost her first-round match against Zarina Diyas at the Citi Open held in Washington.
The 15 years old made it to the main draw after losing only 9 of her qualifying games but was beaten by 6-4 and 6-2 against the world rank no. 84 from Kazakhstan in a 79 minutes long match.
Gauff, the world rank no. 146 rose to fame after her remarkable performance to make it to the 4th round of Wimbledon earlier this month. She was competing in her 3rd main draw appearance.
After being defeated by Dias, Gauff now only has a maximum of 6 more professional events in her season to play before she turns 16 years old next year in March.
She was knocked out by Simona Halep in the 4th round Wimbledon match to become the youngest ever payer in history of All-England Club. The first one was Jennifer Capriati who made it to 2nd week of Wimbledon back in 1991.
In other high profile matches of the women’s draw of the first round, top-seeded player of the Citi Open; Sloane Stephens was defeated by 6-2 and 7-5 against Rebecca Peterson. Stephens who is currently working rank no. 8 lost against the world rank no. 70. Stephens was also the winner of the 2015 Citi pen single’s division while also won the 2017’s doubles division.
As for Peterson, she will next face Camila Giorgi of Italy in the 2nd round who defeated America’s Sachia Vickery by 6-2 and 7-5.
As for the other high profile exit of the day was the 8th seeded player of Puerto Rico named Monica Puig who got defeated by America’s Allie Kiick by 6-4 and 6-2.
