The situation of US Open this year is really extreme as the top contenders for the tournament are being put to their limits. Federer lost to John Millman and Nadal barely managed to avoid the same fate as Federer in early hours of Wednesday morning after a long gruesome match.
After twenty four hour the Federer defeat from John Millman at the Arthur Ashe Stadium; his greatest rival was tested same but made a comeback after defeating Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals.
Nadal won the match with scores 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, and 7-6 which happens to be one of the longest matches in history of US Open. The match finished at 2:04 am and lasted for a total of 4 hours and 49 minutes. Nadal’s win allowed him to stop in the semifinals where he will be facing Juan Martin del Potro who beat John Inser; a match that was more gruesome conditions than both Federer’s and Nadal’s in the middle of the day.
Thiem has a reputation of beating Nadal on clay in the previous two seasons but this was his best performances on Hard Court for the first time which he unfortunately lost. After being defeated in the first set with a drop of seven points; Thiem evenly matched every blow from Nadal in rest of the match. Unfortunately his performance in the third round cost him his victory.
Nadal told media that, “I just kept on going. The battle was too exhilarating conditions were tough and air was very humid.”
The World no. 1 and defending Champion made it to last four after winning three exciting but physically draining matches against players; Karen Khachanov, Nikoloz Basilashvili and Dominic Thiem.
