Arsenal ‘hunt’ Man City – what 7-0 win means for WSL title race

What once looked like a comfortable march toward the Women’s Super League title for Manchester City has suddenly turned into a far more competitive race. The champions-elect are now facing renewed pressure from Arsenal, who have closed the gap and reignited their title hopes with a strong late-season surge.

Arsenal midfielder Frida Maanum summed up the team’s mentality after their dominant 7-0 win over Leicester City on Wednesday. Speaking confidently, she explained that the squad prefers to be in a chasing role, describing how they enjoy “hunting” the leaders from behind and attempting to close the distance as the season reaches its final stages.

That emphatic victory not only pushed Leicester into a relegation play-off situation but also significantly boosted Arsenal’s goal difference. More importantly, it reduced the gap to Manchester City to eight points. While that margin still appears substantial, Arsenal hold the advantage of having two games in hand, keeping their title ambitions alive.

Despite the growing optimism among fans and players, Arsenal manager Renée Slegers remained cautious. When asked about the possibility of catching City, she avoided making bold predictions and emphasized that nothing has been secured yet. Her message was clear: the team must continue focusing on each match and maintain consistent performance levels.

Arsenal’s recent form has been impressive, particularly in front of goal. Over their last three Women’s Super League matches, they have scored 17 goals while conceding only two, demonstrating both attacking strength and defensive stability. Their dominant win over Leicester was the latest example of their improved momentum.

The 7-0 victory also highlighted Arsenal’s depth and attacking variety. Leah Williamson’s header in the closing stages sealed the seventh goal of the night, bringing Arsenal’s total goals under Slegers’ leadership to 103 since she took charge in October 2024, initially in an interim role. No other WSL team has scored more during that period, underlining the attacking identity she has built.

Slegers praised her players after the match, describing the performance as a complete display. She highlighted the clean sheet, the number of different goal scorers, and the overall fluidity of Arsenal’s attacking play. According to her, the team showed bravery and played in a style that reflects the traditional Arsenal philosophy—technical, attacking, and expressive football.

Another key factor boosting Arsenal’s confidence is the strength and depth of their squad. With a crucial UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Lyon approaching, Slegers rotated her lineup significantly against Leicester. Several key players, including Williamson, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Mariona Caldentey, Caitlin Foord, and Alessia Russo, were rested for the match.

Despite these changes, Arsenal’s performance did not suffer. Instead, the players who came in delivered outstanding displays. Frida Maanum marked her 100th WSL appearance with a goal and two assists, showcasing her growing influence in midfield. Smilla Holmberg also impressed by scoring her first two goals for the club, further demonstrating the squad’s depth.

Stina Blackstenius, often used as a backup option behind Alessia Russo, also played a starring role. The Swedish striker, who scored the winning goal in last season’s Champions League final, found the net twice in just nine minutes, reminding everyone of her quality and finishing ability.

Slegers praised the unity within her squad, highlighting the strong communication and trust among the players. She emphasized that every individual understands their role, and this collective understanding has contributed to their strong performances throughout the season. According to her, the team’s cohesion both on and off the pitch has been a key factor in their success.

Despite Arsenal’s resurgence, Manchester City remain in control of their own destiny. The title race is still firmly in their hands, and if they win their remaining matches, they will secure the Women’s Super League trophy for the first time since 2016, regardless of Arsenal’s results.

City’s remaining fixtures appear favorable on paper, with matches against Liverpool and West Ham—teams currently positioned in the lower half of the table. They also have an FA Cup semi-final to navigate, but their league schedule gives them a strong opportunity to finish the job.

Former players have also weighed in on the title race. Nikita Parris, who has played for both Manchester City and Arsenal, noted that while Arsenal can apply pressure, the responsibility ultimately lies with City to secure the title. She stressed that City’s position means the outcome is still in their control.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have a more challenging set of fixtures to complete their campaign. They are set to face Brighton, Aston Villa, and Everton, followed by a final-day clash against Liverpool. While these matches are winnable, they must also rely on Manchester City dropping points to have any chance of lifting the trophy.

City’s squad strength remains one of their biggest advantages. Their attacking lineup is among the most powerful in the league, with Khadija Shaw leading the scoring charts with 19 goals, significantly ahead of her closest rivals. Vivianne Miedema and Kerolin also contribute heavily, adding depth and creativity in the final third.

In addition, players like Kerstin Casparij and Lauren Hemp have provided valuable assists throughout the season, further enhancing City’s attacking threat. Their combination of experience, talent, and consistency makes them a formidable opponent in the title race.

As the season approaches its conclusion, the battle between Manchester City and Arsenal continues to intensify. While City remain favorites due to their points advantage and squad strength, Arsenal’s recent form ensures that the race is far from over.

The final weeks of the Women’s Super League promise excitement, pressure, and drama as both teams push for glory. Whether City hold on or Arsenal complete a remarkable comeback, the outcome will be decided in a thrilling finish to the season.
