Sinner speeds into history book – and is matching the greats

Jannik Sinner continues to establish himself as one of the most dominant forces in modern tennis, achieving milestones at a pace rarely witnessed in the men’s game. The Italian star added another historic achievement to his rapidly growing resume by winning the Italian Open in Rome, completing what is known as the “career Golden Masters.” This remarkable feat involves winning all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments at least once, a record previously achieved only by Novak Djokovic.

At just 24 years old, Sinner’s accomplishment is even more extraordinary when considering the level of competition, physical demands, and consistency required to succeed across different surfaces and conditions. By defeating Norway’s Casper Ruud in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, in front of an electrified home crowd, Sinner not only lifted the Rome title but also secured his sixth consecutive Masters 1000 victory—a new benchmark in itself.

The final showcased Sinner’s composure and tactical intelligence. After falling behind early in the first set, he demonstrated resilience by breaking back and regaining control of the match. His ability to mix up his game, including the effective use of drop shots to disrupt Ruud’s rhythm, highlighted his versatility. In the second set, Sinner maintained a steady and controlled approach, dictating play from the baseline and closing out the match with confidence.

Reflecting on his success, Sinner expressed both joy and humility, acknowledging the intense pressure he faced throughout the tournament. He emphasized that his journey is still ongoing, noting that at 24, he continues to learn and evolve as a player. His recent form has been nothing short of exceptional, with victories at major tournaments such as Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid contributing to his incredible run.

What makes Sinner’s Golden Masters achievement even more impressive is the speed at which he has accomplished it. He only claimed his first Masters 1000 title in 2023 at the Canadian Open, yet within a relatively short period, he has managed to complete the full set. In comparison, Djokovic was 31 years old when he first achieved the feat in 2018, later repeating it in 2020.

Former British tennis player Tim Henman praised Sinner’s achievement, highlighting the immense difficulty of maintaining such a high level across multiple tournaments worldwide. The constant travel, changing surfaces, and intense competition make Sinner’s consistency a testament to his all-around excellence.

With the Italian Open now behind him, attention shifts to the French Open at Roland Garros. Sinner enters the tournament as the clear favorite, especially given his current form and the absence of key rivals due to injuries. A victory in Paris would see him complete a career Grand Slam, joining an elite group of players who have won all four major titles.

Sinner has already claimed the Australian Open twice, along with victories at Wimbledon and the US Open. Adding the French Open to his collection would further solidify his place among tennis legends. If he manages to achieve this, the only major accolade missing from his resume would be an Olympic gold medal, completing the full set of tennis’s most prestigious individual honors.

Despite his young age, Sinner’s list of achievements is already remarkable. He has secured 16 “big titles,” a category that includes Grand Slams, Masters 1000 tournaments, the ATP Finals, and the Olympics. This puts him on a trajectory comparable to some of the greatest players in history.

At a similar age, Novak Djokovic had won 17 major titles, while Roger Federer had accumulated 19. Rafael Nadal, known for his dominance on clay, had an even more impressive tally of 28 titles by the same stage of his career. However, it is important to consider the context of these achievements.

Djokovic’s early success came during an era widely regarded as one of the strongest in tennis history, competing against Federer, Nadal, Andy Murray, and other top players. Similarly, Federer faced fierce competition from players like Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, and Lleyton Hewitt before Nadal and Djokovic emerged.

Nadal’s rapid rise was fueled by his dominance on clay, where he quickly established himself as nearly unbeatable. However, injuries and the emergence of Djokovic later in his career slowed his momentum.

In contrast, Sinner’s current era is often seen as less competitive in terms of depth. While he faces strong opposition from Carlos Alcaraz, who is considered his primary rival, the overall field lacks the consistency and dominance of previous generations. Alcaraz himself is achieving impressive results at a young age, with 15 major titles already to his name.

Nevertheless, the rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has the potential to define a new era in tennis. Both players are exceptionally talented and driven, and their future battles could shape the sport for years to come.

Sinner’s dominance is further reflected in his statistics. He currently leads the world rankings with a significant points advantage over his closest competitors. His win-loss record this season is outstanding, having won 36 of his 38 matches. The only players to defeat him this year are Novak Djokovic and Czech player Jakub Mensik.

Additionally, Sinner has not lost a Masters 1000 match since October 2025, when he retired due to injury during a match in Shanghai. Since then, he has been virtually unstoppable at this level.

One of the most remarkable aspects of his season is his unbeaten run at the first six Masters events of the year. Sinner became the first player since the format’s introduction in 1990 to start 29-0 across these tournaments, underlining his consistency and dominance.

As he prepares for the challenges ahead, particularly at Roland Garros, Sinner stands on the brink of even greater achievements. His combination of skill, mental strength, and determination positions him as a leading figure in the sport’s future.

While uncertainties such as injuries, form fluctuations, and emerging competitors could influence his career trajectory, Sinner’s current path suggests he is destined for greatness. His rapid rise and sustained excellence have already secured his place among tennis’s elite, and the coming years may see him rewrite even more records.
