Four years ago, Alexander Zverev experienced one of the most painful and heartbreaking moments of his career on Court Philippe-Chatrier. During the 2022 French Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal, the German tennis star suffered a devastating ankle injury after a nasty fall. At the time, he was already trailing by a set in what had been an intense and closely contested match.

The injury was severe. Zverev tore multiple ligaments in his right ankle and fractured bones, leaving him in agony on the court. He had to be carried off in a wheelchair, his hopes of winning a Grand Slam title crushed once again. It was a moment that not only ended his tournament but also kept him out of action for several months as he underwent surgery and began a long recovery process.

Fast forward 1,465 days, and Zverev returned to the very same court, but this time, the story had a completely different ending. In a dramatic and hard-fought final at Roland Garros, he defeated Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in a gripping five-set battle to finally secure his first Grand Slam title. The victory marked a significant milestone in his career, ending years of near misses and disappointment.

Reflecting on his journey, Zverev described Court Philippe-Chatrier as a place filled with both painful and unforgettable memories. He recalled the darkest moment of his career when he lay injured on the court, uncertain about whether he would ever return to professional tennis. Over the years, he had also experienced heartbreak at the venue, including a loss in a Grand Slam final two years prior.

However, this time, the narrative was different. Holding the trophy in his hands, Zverev celebrated what he described as a “happy ending” to a long and challenging journey. His victory was not just about winning a title; it was about overcoming adversity, resilience, and proving his ability to succeed on the biggest stage.

For years, Zverev had been labeled as one of the most talented players of his generation to have never won a Grand Slam. Despite consistently performing at a high level, he had fallen short in crucial moments, particularly in major finals. His career had been marked by several painful defeats that only added to the pressure.

One of the most notable setbacks came at the 2020 US Open, where Zverev was on the brink of victory. He led Dominic Thiem by two sets and even served for the championship in the final set. However, he was unable to close out the match, eventually losing in a dramatic turnaround.

Another opportunity slipped away at the 2024 French Open, where he held a two-sets-to-one lead against Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Despite his strong position, it was the Spanish star who ultimately claimed the title, leaving Zverev once again wondering what might have been.

The challenges continued at the 2025 Australian Open, where he faced Jannik Sinner in the final. In that match, Zverev was comprehensively outplayed, leading him to later admit that he felt mentally drained and “empty” after the defeat. These repeated disappointments created a narrative that he struggled to perform under pressure in the biggest matches.

Heading into this year’s French Open, there was a sense that this might be Zverev’s best opportunity to finally break his Grand Slam drought. The tournament saw several unexpected developments that opened up the draw. Top seed Jannik Sinner suffered a shock early exit, while Carlos Alcaraz withdrew due to injury. Novak Djokovic, a multiple-time champion in Paris, was also eliminated earlier than expected.

With the field wide open, Zverev seized the opportunity. Although he did not face a top-25 opponent until the later stages, he remained focused and determined throughout the tournament. His path to the final may have been less challenging on paper, but he still had to deliver under pressure—and he did.

In the final against Flavio Cobolli, Zverev faced a tough challenge. The Italian showed resilience, twice coming back from a set down to force a decisive fifth set. It was a tense and emotionally charged contest, raising questions about whether Zverev could finally overcome his struggles in Grand Slam finals.

This time, however, Zverev demonstrated a new level of composure and mental strength. Despite the pressure, he managed to stay calm and execute his game plan effectively. When the final point was won, he collapsed onto the court in celebration, overwhelmed by emotion.

After the match, Zverev dedicated his victory to his team, including his father and brother, who had supported him throughout his career. He acknowledged the difficult moments they had endured together—injuries, losses, and missed opportunities—but emphasized that their perseverance had finally paid off.

For Zverev, the victory was not just about the present moment but also about overcoming the doubts and challenges of the past. He admitted that the memories of his injury and previous defeats would always remain with him. However, this triumph would stand above all those experiences, redefining his career.

Among those who congratulated him was Rafael Nadal, the very player who had been on the court when Zverev suffered his injury in 2022. Nadal praised his perseverance and hard work, recognizing the effort it took to finally achieve such a significant milestone.

While Zverev’s on-court achievements have been remarkable, his career has also been accompanied by controversy. In 2023, he faced legal issues involving allegations of bodily harm made by a former partner. Zverev denied the claims, and the case led to a legal process that was eventually discontinued. The court clarified that the decision was not a judgment of guilt or innocence, and a separate settlement was reportedly reached.

Additionally, earlier allegations made in 2020 by another former partner were also denied by Zverev, who consistently maintained his innocence. No legal proceedings were pursued in that case.

Despite these challenges, Zverev’s victory at Roland Garros represents a defining moment in his career. It is a story of resilience, determination, and redemption. From being carried off the court in pain to returning as a champion, his journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
