Elena Rybakina won her first US Open title on Saturday, beating Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in a three-set women’s singles final at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The win is Rybakina’s third Grand Slam singles title and comes just days after she overtook Sabalenka to reach world No. 1 for the first time in her career. Sabalenka, the two-time defending US Open champion, fought back to take the second set before Rybakina closed out the match in the third.
The result caps a breakthrough season for Rybakina, who has now beaten Sabalenka in a Grand Slam final for the second time. It also confirms her position at the top of the WTA rankings heading into the rest of the season.
