Morocco beat Cameroon to reach Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals

Morocco Defeat Cameroon to Reach Historic AFCON Semi-Final

RABAT: Morocco kept their Africa Cup of Nations title hopes alive with a confident 2-0 victory over Cameroon in a highly anticipated quarter-final clash on Friday night, as goals from Brahim Diaz and Ismael Saibari sent the hosts into the semi-finals for the first time in over two decades.

Playing in front of a passionate crowd of more than 64,000 fans at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco delivered a controlled and mature performance, justifying their status as tournament favorites and Africa’s top-ranked national team.

Real Madrid winger Brahim Diaz continued his sensational scoring streak at the tournament, while PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ismael Saibari sealed the win in the second half to spark wild celebrations across the capital.

Diaz Extends Incredible AFCON Record

Morocco wasted little time asserting their authority, dominating possession and pushing Cameroon deep into their own half from the opening whistle. Their breakthrough arrived in the 26th minute, following sustained pressure.

A corner delivered by Achraf Hakimi caused chaos in the Cameroon penalty area. Ayoub El Kaabi met the ball at the near post with a powerful header, which struck Diaz before crossing the line. While the finish was scrappy, the goal once again highlighted Diaz’s importance, marking his fifth goal in five matches at the tournament.

The strike further enhanced Diaz’s reputation as Morocco’s standout performer and one of the most decisive players in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Morocco in Complete Control

With the early goal calming the nerves of the home crowd, Morocco grew increasingly confident. Their movement, pressing, and technical quality overwhelmed a Cameroon side that struggled to impose themselves.

Before halftime, Morocco nearly doubled their lead. Abde Ezzalzouli went close with a header, while El Kaabi forced the Cameroonian defense into several last-ditch clearances. The hosts went into the break deservedly ahead, receiving a rapturous reception from the stands.

Cameroon, five-time African champions, entered the match hoping to frustrate the hosts and exploit counter-attacking opportunities. However, their plans were disrupted early when Jackson Tchamadeu suffered a knee injury after a heavy collision with Hakimi. Despite attempting to continue, the wing-back was eventually stretchered off, forcing an early tactical reshuffle.

Cameroon Struggle to Respond

After halftime, Cameroon coach David Pagou switched systems, moving from a back three to a 4-2-3-1 formation in search of greater attacking threat. Despite the change, clear chances remained scarce.

Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo was largely neutralized by Morocco’s disciplined defense and failed to significantly trouble goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. One penalty appeal from Mbeumo was waved away by the referee, further frustrating the Cameroonian players.

Morocco, meanwhile, continued to press for a second goal. Hakimi’s deliveries from wide areas repeatedly unsettled the Cameroon defense, while Saibari and Ezzalzouli linked up effectively between the lines.

Saibari Delivers the Decisive Blow

The decisive moment arrived in the 74th minute. From a dead-ball situation, Ezzalzouli’s delivery was expertly controlled by Ismael Saibari, who calmly fired the ball into the net to double Morocco’s advantage.

The goal effectively ended the contest, igniting scenes of celebration inside the stadium and across the country. Morocco managed the closing stages professionally, keeping possession and denying Cameroon any opportunity to mount a comeback.

Regragui Hails Historic Achievement

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui was understandably delighted after the match, praising both his players and the significance of the achievement.

“This is historic,” Regragui said. “Moroccans have not seen their national team reach an AFCON semi-final for 22 years. The players deserve it, but we must remain humble and make this journey even more special.”

The coach reserved special praise for Brahim Diaz, describing him as the driving force behind Morocco’s success.

“Diaz was the X-factor again. His work rate, movement, and desire send a message to the entire squad. He has been exceptional throughout this competition.”

Cameroon Exit with Pride

Despite the defeat, Cameroon coach David Pagou, who was appointed less than a month before the tournament, expressed pride in his team’s performance.

“We are satisfied with the way the players competed,” Pagou said. “We only began working together on December 16, but the team gave joy to the people of Cameroon. That is important.”

Cameroon exceeded expectations by reaching the quarter-finals after a turbulent preparation period, and their exit marked the end of a campaign that showed promise despite its disappointing conclusion.

Morocco Carry the Weight of Expectation

As 2022 World Cup semi-finalists, Morocco entered the Africa Cup of Nations under immense pressure to deliver on home soil. Their last continental triumph came 50 years ago, and doubts lingered over whether the team could handle the weight of expectation.

So far, they have answered those questions convincingly. Friday’s victory marked their first AFCON semi-final appearance since 2004, when they finished runners-up to Tunisia.

Morocco now remain unbeaten since their loss to South Africa at the 2024 AFCON and will face either Algeria or Nigeria in Wednesday’s semi-final — a far sterner test than Cameroon.

Final Thoughts

Morocco’s 2-0 victory over Cameroon was a statement performance, blending tactical discipline, attacking quality, and mental strength. With Diaz in exceptional form and the squad playing with confidence, the hosts are edging closer to fulfilling their long-awaited continental dream.
