The winners of the 4 Grand Slam champions of this year were split evenly into the 2 groups of the WTA Finals in a draw made in Shenzhen.
Ashleigh Barty, the tops seeded player at the WTA Finals and the Winner of the French Open this year, will be the headliner of the Red Group where she will be joined by the winner of the Australian Open Naomi Osaka, the Czech’s tennis sensation Petra Kvitova and the Swiss superstar Belinda Bencic.
Barty said of the draw and the upcoming WTA Finals, “I am really excited to be playing in the singles for the very first time in my crier. I only have played the doubles in this competition a few times. I recently played against Petra and Naomi in Beijing and now I am looking forward to playing against Belinda. I don’t think that I have had the chance to play against her before. This is a really exciting group for me.”
As for Osaka, she said of the WTA Finals draw, “For me, I have played against everyone in my group this season. I am now super excited to have a chance to play a couple of rematches. I do not know, this is the 2nd time that I am playing in the WTA Finals. This is why I am really happy to be able to be here.”
Karolina Pliskova, the world rank no. 2 and the winner of 2 singles titles this season, is the top spot in the Purple Group where she will be facing other players such as Bianca Andreescu, winner of the US Open champion, Simona Help; the winner of Wimbledon this year, and the WTA Finals defending champion Elina Svitolina.
Svitolina said of the WTA Finals Purple Group pairing, “There are no easy draws here in the WTA Finals. For sure, it seems like there are going to be a lot of exciting matches ahead. Just like last year, I am going to try winning one match at a time. I do not look too far ahead in the future. I only try to remain focus on the match at hand and that is the right way. I will try to do that.”
