Atlético Madrid loses to Cultural Leonesa; a 3rd-division team, in Copa del Rey

In the Thursday game of Copa del Rey held between the top tier team Atlético Madrid and the 3rd divisional team named Cultural Leonesa, Atlético suffered a 2-1 loss.

Atlético had to relinquish their late lead in the game and then conceded another goal during the extra time that caused them to be eliminated from the round of 32 of Copa del Rey.

Atlético has never been eliminated this early on from Copa del Rey since they lost to Albacete back in the 2011-2012 season and just before they had hired the coach Diego Simeone. That was the last time when the team ever suffered a loss this early on Copa del Rey to such a low division club.

Lucas Giffard, the French goalie for the Cultural Leonesa was the one credited to his team’s win as he made some superb saves through this game while the game-winning goal was scored by Sergio Bonito during the 108th minute. With this win, this small club is now entering the last 16 of Copa del Rey for the first time. The last time they made it this far was back during the season of 1959-1960. Last year they got ousted from the round of 32 at the hands of Barcelona.

Simeone said, “We had our chances tonight but their goalkeeper was really superb. They played with high ambition. This competition does not allow you to make any mistakes.”

The 13000 people crowd at the Reino de Leone stadium was on their feet after the game-winning goal was scored by Sergio. He made the game-winner from the Atlético’s inside area after their defense could not keep up.

The first goal for the game that gave Atlético their lead in the game was scored by Angel Correa on a left-foot shot that came from the penalty area during the 62nd minute of the game.

The game was equalized after Leonesa’s Julen Castañeda scored the goal during the 83rd minute.
