Maria Sharapova defeated the defending Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki in a thrilling Friday match of the Australian Open at Rod Laver Arena.
Sharapova, who last won the tournament back in 2008, came in her second round match against Wozniacki with an aggressive approach as she hit 37 winner shots and won a thrilling victory by 6-4 4-6 6-3.
After Sharapova’s shocking win over Wozniacki, she said, “I knew I was going to have a really tough match against her as she is the defending champion and it is not a secret that she loves this arena. I have not played any big matches against top players last year and this is what I normally train for, so yeah, this is a relay rewarding win for me.”
Maria Sharapova will not next face the local favorite Ashleigh Barty, who is the first local player to make it into the last 16 after she defeated Maria Sakkari by 7-5 6-1.
On the other hand, Seventeen-year-old Amanda Anisimova made a shocking win over Aryna Sabalenka as she reached into the fourth round.
Sabalenka, the 20 years old player has been recently enjoying he own rapid rise in the game but could not match Anisimova. The teenager during heir match looked like as if she has been playing big matches on the Margaret Court Arena every day as she bewildered Sabalenka with 21 winners in less than 65 minutes.
