Novak Djokovic, the world no. 1 has moved into the semi-finals of the Australian Open after his opponent Kei Nishikori retired due to injury. Djokovic prior to Nishikori’s injury was trailing by a lead of 6-1 and 4-1 when Nishikori decoded that he was unable to continue any further into the competition due to his thigh problem.
The top seed of the tournament, Novak Djokovic will now face the Frenchman Lucas Pouille who defeated his opponent Milos Raonic by 7-6, 6-3, 6-7 and 6-4 for his place in the semi-finals.
Djokovic said, “I love to battle, especially against Kei Nishikori. We have played so many matches over the years.”
Djokovic also had to endure his own medical problem on Monday in his match against Daniil Medvedev and also admitted that he is still feeling the effects after the match.
He said, “This is what the doctors have ordered, not too spend too much time at court. I am in another semi-final and will do everything to get ready for this one.”
On the other hand, Rafael Nadal will take on the Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas for the semifinal match.
Djokovic is looking to secure his seventh title win at Melbourne. His path until the eight rounds has been straightforward due to Nishikori’s fitness issues.
The Japanese star had to have timeouts in between the sets due to the problem of his thighs.
By the premature end of the match, Nishikori seemed visibly exhausted and was hardly able to move.
