Roger Federer, the two time defending champion of the tournament was pushed to his limit in his second round match against Dan Evans. However, the third seed Federer held on strongly to end the match in his straight sets victory.
Evans with this match has given a reminder to the world as to what kind of a player he is as he pushed the 20 times Grand Slam Champion a severe test.
28 years old Birmingham player reached the height of his career two years ago after he defeated Marin Cilic in Melbourne to make into the fourth round. However, he was later banned from playing after he was found out taking cocaine.
Since his return back to the game, he has worked back to make it to the world rank no. 189 in less than a year. He will be soon able to make it into the Top 100 ranking if he continues to display the skills he showed in his 7-6, 7-6, and 6-3 defeat against Federer.
Federer, who with this win has now won 16 straight games at Melbourne, said to media that it was like he was playing his own mirror image. Federer said, “I think I could not pull away from the match early in the first round. He played very well. It was very hard for me to pull away and the credit goes to him. I was happy to have won the first set as it was a great thing.”
Federer, who Is bidding for his record seventh title win in Melbourne Park and third in a row, will now play against the American Taylor Fritz who himself defeated French player Gael Monfils by 6-3 6-7, 7-6, and 7-6.
