Serena Williams got knocked out of the semifinals of the Australian Open on Wednesday as Karolina Pliskova managed to save four match points for her remarkable win.
In the deciding set, Williams looked to have overpowered her opponent as she was at 5-1 lead. However, surprisingly, Karolina Pliskova managed to win six straight games to win the match and set up a meeting against the US Open Champion Naomi Osaka for her first semifinals match at Melbourne. Karolina Pliskova won the match by 6-4, 4-6 and 7-5.
Pliskova, who is in the running to finish the tournament as world No 1, said, “I was almost standing in the locker room but now I am standing as a winner here. So yeah, it is a very good feeling. My mind was in the locker room. She was playing very good and it was tough for me. I was a bit passive mentally. Then she got a little bit shaky and I got my chance to win.”
As for Osaka, she managed to win over her opponent Elina Svitolina by 6-4 and 6-1. The US Open Champion managed to win the match in only 1 hour and 12 minutes against the 6th seed player.
During her on-court interview, Osaka said, “I tried to be consistent or remain as consistent as I can be. Elina is a great player and it is kind of unfortunate that she got injured. Playing against her with her being injured, it was still very tough.”
She further said, “I had only one goal, to pay as hard as I can and not get angry. I think I did it very well and so I am really happy.”
