Simona Halep almost lost her second round match but then won it to set a blockbuster third round match against Venus Williams for the third round of Australian Open. On the other hand, Serena Williams has eased through the last 16 of the tournament.
Halep, who was the runner up in Melbourne last year and Venus Williams both had to play tough games then they expected for in the second round matchups.
As for Serena, things were a lot earlier who is chasing her eighth title in Melbourne as she defeated her opponent Eugenie Bouchard by 6-2 and 6-2 in a mere 70 minutes.
With this, Serena has now won 22 of her 23 matches at Melbourne Park and she can be the prospect to play against whoever wins in the Halep vs. Venus third round match that is the headline of the tournament on Saturday.
Serena Williams has her eyes set on the 24th career singles Grand Slam target. Serena will now face a Ukrainian teenager named Dayana Yastremenko who defeated her 23rd seed opponent Carla Suarez Navarro by 6-3 3-6 6-1.
As for Halep’s second-round match, she was given a tough fight by the Russian-born American Sofia Kenin as she won the match by 6-3 6-7 6-4.
Venus Williams cruised in the third round after her own tough game against the French player Alize Cornet by 6-3 4-6 6-0.
