Ben Bishop, the goalie of Dallas Stars, who happens to be the finalist for the Vezina Trophy, was the main reason behind the fact that his team was only victory shy of making it into the Western Conference with the Sunday’s afternoon game.
He was able to keep his team in Game 6 trailing by 2-1 during the 3rd period when a sequence happened that ensured the victory for Louis Blues. This victory for Louis Blues was a major turning point for the second round of the playoff series.
Colton Parayko, the defenseman of Blues made a long shot at Bishop which struck him in the collarbone and led to the goalie falling on the ice. The rebound was controlled by Alex Steen who then skated into the position for a shot that was deflected into the net by Jaden Schwartz. The shot was made past the motionless Bishop.
The play was allowed for continuation because the Puck was in possession of Blues.
The play was allowed under Rule 8:1 of the NHL which states as follows,
“When a player is injured so that he cannot continue to play or go to his bench, the play shall not be stopped until the injured player’s team has secured control of the puck. If the player’s team is in control of the puck at the time of injury, play shall be stopped immediately unless his team is in a scoring position.”
As for referees, they have the option to stop the play in the case if any player is hurt. However, for this case, the same was not the rule.
Bishop following his accident was looked by a trainer and was allowed to stay in the game.
He again, into the game 33 seconds gave up another goal. This allowed the Blues to have a 4-1 lead and Bishop then left for the dressing room.
