Bianca Andreescu lifts the Rogers Cup trophy after Serena Williams withdraws due to injury

Bianca Andreescu has become the first-ever Canadian female tennis star to win the Rogers Cup title after Serena Williams; her finals opponent withdrew from their match due to injury.

Andreescu, the favorite of her hometown in Toronto had given a lot of reason for her fans to be excited about her making it to the third final of her season and against the 23 times Grand Slam champion like Serena.

Williams was already under pressure against Andreescu after she suffered a breakpoint loss in the first set’s opening game. Later Andreescu was leading he set by 3-1 in only 19 minutes.

Soon the American was not able to continue her game and returned back to her chair after only 4th game. She was forced to retire from the match due to her back injury that saw the 37 years old breaking into tears.

Andreescu consoled the former champion after Serena’s retirement from the match was confirmed and the Canadian lifted her 2nd title of the season in presence of her hometown crowd.

For this tournament, there has not been a Canadian winner of this tournament since 1892 when the tournament was first held under the name Canadian Open. In 1962 two Canadian players Faye Urban and Vicki Berner faced off each other in the tournaments final and Urban won the title.

As for Andreescu, she said, “right now, I am speechless. I am the very first Canadian to have ever made it to the finals of this tournament and have won the title since 1969. This week was not at all easy. I have had been through many matches and what I have been through of or the past 2 months have not been easy at all. I kept on telling myself to never give up.”

On her route to the final, 19 years old Andreescu was blew to beat 2 of the Top 10 ranking players and is now going to make it to the world top 20 for the first time in her career.
