Bianca Andreescu wins the US Open women’s singles title puts an end to Serena Williams’s pursuit of 24 Grand Slam record

In the US Open final of women’s singles between Bianca Andreescu and Serena Williams, Andreescu won the match to win her first title of Grand Slam tournament. She also put a halt to William’s pursuit of tying for the Grand Slam record wins.

Serena, the 6 times champion of the US Open, was defeated by the 19 years old Canadian tennis star by 6-3 and 7-5. This is Serena’s 4th defeat in a final of a Grand Slam since the birth of her daughter from back in September 2017.

Andreescu said in the title ceremony, “It is really hard for me to explain but I am simply grateful and truly blessed. I have worked so hard for this. This year has been a dream come true for me. To be able to play here on this stage against Serena; a legend in this sport is simply amazing. Oh, man, it was not at all easy. I tried my best to focus and prepare along with not focusing on the fact as to against whom I was playing. It is easy to say this but I am really proud of the way I dealt with everything.”

She further said, “It was obvious of Serena to fight back and that is why she is a true champion. I tried my best to block everything out. The last game was not at all easy for me to win.”

Andreescu, lost last year in the 1st radon of the US Open’s qualifier but this year she made all the way to the final without losing a set.

Williams said, “I was only fighting at the last point. I was only trying to stay in the match for a little bit longer. Then the fans started cheering and it made it hard for me not to play a bit better and fight a bit hard. Bianca, she played such an amazing match. I am so proud of you and also happy for you. If anyone else could have won this apart from Venus, I am happy that it was Bianca.”
