Kei Nishikori manages to claim his first title win at the Brisbane International since 2016 after defeating his Russian opponent Daniil Medvedev by 6—4, 3-6 and 6-2.
The Japanese tennis star had not won any titles since the 2016’s Memphis Open and after that, he was hampered by a wrist injury that very same year that forced him to take a break from 2018 tour.
In the 2017’s Brisbane international tournament, he was the runner-up by this year has managed to finally win the tournament.
Nishikori was able to defeat his Russian rival despite a slight hiccup of a poor service game that cost him the second set.
Their first set ended within 42 minutes. Nishikori was countering all of Medvedev’s services and volleys with his powerful and well-grounded stokes which force Medvedev into making forced errors.
Medvedev only managed to win the second set by taking advantage of Nishikori poor service game.
Nishikori after his victory said to media, “I feel like in the second, I was waiting too much and could not avail all the chances that I had. Medvedev played really well for the last game. He took the risk and did well, so all the credit goes to his second set.”
Overall Nishikori is impressed by is performance as he heads into the Australian Open where he never managed o progress further than the quarterfinals. He said, “My main goal is to do well in the Australian Open and I am really happy with the way I have been playing this week. Even If I had lost today, I would have been very confident. So I am happy to go to Melbourne and I am feeling its one of my favorite tournaments there.”
As for the women’s title at the Brisbane International, Karolina Pliskova managed to defeat her opponent Lesia Tsurenko by 4-6, 7-5 and 6-2 to claim the second Brisbane International title of her career.
With this victory, she is the third woman to have the event title twice. Other players are Victoria Azarenka (2009, 2016) and Serena Williams (2013-14).
