Cal Ramsey, the Former Knicks player dies at 81

Cal Ramsey who started his career in basketball by playing for NYU in the 1950s and later being a player for the New York Knicks and their broadcaster died earlier on Monday at age 81.

According to Knicks Cal died at The Riverside Premier Rehabilitation and Healing Center located in Manhattan as a result of a cardiac arrest.

After his professional career of playing basketball for the Knicks, Ramsey started as a color broadcaster for the team as well as their community relations later. He served the position of being the Knicks ambassador for nearly 28 years. In addition to this, he was also on the staff of the NYU until 1983.

He was born in Selma, Alabama and was a graduate of the NYU in 1959. He during his college basketball career averaged in 20.2 points and 17.5 rebounds. He still holds the NYU record for the most rebounds with his 34 rebounds against Boston College team. He also served time as the assistant coach of the NYU team and made 25 postseason appearances as well.

In the NBA, Ramsey played for teams like St. Louis Hawks as well as the Syracuse Nationals. He was also the member of the NYU Athletics as well as the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame.

Adam Silver, the NBA Commissioner wrote in a Twitter post while offering his condolences to the family, friends and the fans of Ramsey as follows,

“From Rucker Park to the Garden, Cal Ramsey was a New York City basketball icon. He was a kind and caring friend who gave so much to the game he loved.”
