Simona Halep; the world no. 21 seed was forced to retire from her first round at China Open after suffering from back injury.
Romanian player lost the opening set against the Tunisian player Ons Jabeur by 6-1 in the 30 minutes match. After the first set she haled the proceedings writhing in pain.
Halep told media that, “there is a pain in my back and I could not move properly on the field. This is why I stopped the match. I have no idea as to exactly what this is. I am going to go home and have an MRI Scan to see what this really is. I am worried as well as sad that I could not finish. I stopped the match because I felt if I continue it is going to get worse”.
She further stated, “It is really bad for a tennis player to have a back injury because then you cannot bend or react to balls. I simply could not play”.
Angelique Kerber; third seed of the tournament was able to defeated the Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic by 6-2 and 6-2. As for the fourth seed player Caroline Garcia from France, she defeated the wildcard player Wang Yafan by 7-6, 6-7 and 6-3.
13th seed Darai Kastakina also retired from the match against German player Laura Siegemund after 6-4 and 4-2.
