Coco Gauff, after her remarkable run at this year’s Wimbledon up to 4th round with her first-round win against Venus Williams, is now once more eligible to play in the upcoming Citi Open that will be played near the end of July.
Gauff became the first-ever youngest player since 1991 to have made it to the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon. She lost her match against Simona Halep who defeated Serena Williams in the final. Since Wimbledon, Citi Open will be Gauff’s next appearance at a tournament. However, she is going to deal with some hurdles before she qualifies for the main draw.
The amative of Delray Beach, Florida must first win the qualifying round spot that will start on July 27th at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center located in Washington, D.C. due to Gauff being of age 15, she is eligible for taking part in the 14 WTA or the ITF Pro Circuit tournaments.
However, due to her already getting three of the wild card entries, she will not get the fourth one unless she is 16 which she will be in March of 2020.
Although Gauff’s world rank is now no. 141, she enters in the Citi Open as the no. 314 2hcih is her rank before her performance at Wimbledon.
If Gauff manages to win two matches in the qualifying round, she will be able to move into the main draw of the tournament which will start on July 29th.
Gauff said to reporters, “I am really thrilled to be playing in front of my home crowd at our nation’s capital for the Citi Open. These last few weeks have been so amazing for me and I am really excited about coming to DC. I was able to connect with fans and especially with young kids who have been such great support for me this summer. I hope that I will be able to maintain this momentum at Citi Open and all the way to the US opens.”
