Lionel Messi was finally able to avoid another embarrassing defeat with the national team after Argentina was able to avoid the elimination round to advance into the group stage for the Copa America.
Sergio Aguero and Lautaro Martinez both scored one goal each in both halftimes to hand over Argentina its 2-0 win over their guest team Qatar. With this win, Argentina has secured itself a spot for the quarterfinals of the South American tournament.
Messi said, “We were in need of this victory to give us tranquility and confidence. What I liked tonight was the attitude of team and their desire to win.”
Argentina has finished just behind Colombia in the B Group. Columbia favored Argentina by beating Paraguay by 1-0 on Saturday in the other group match.
At the moment, Colombia finished with having 9 points, Argentina at second with 4 points, Paraguay with 2 points and Qatar having 1 point.
The two top teams in each of the 3 groups will now be advancing along with their two of the bets third ranking finishers. Paraguay will only be able to advance further into the competition after the both Ecuador and Japan draw on their Monday matches for the Group C.
Argentina, who has a history of not getting eliminated in the 1st round of this South America competition since they did back in 1983, are going to play against Venezuela for the quarterfinals match. This match will be held at the Maracana Stadium located in Rio de Janeiro.
