South African captain Temba Bavuma did not come out to bat during Day 3 of the first IND vs SA Test after suffering a hamstring injury during the second session on Day 1. Bavuma’s left hamstring injury forced him to leave the field and undergo scans.

According to a recent medical update by Cricket South Africa regarding Temba Bavuma‘s fitness, there was too much risk for the South African captain to bat on Day 3. The medical team is closely monitoring his situation and trying to ensure he has the best chance to bat in the fourth innings if needed.

After not coming to bat in South Africa’s first innings, Bavuma faced criticism for not helping his teammate Marco Jansen hit his maiden Test century. Jansen was left stranded at 84* off 147 balls when the Proteas lost their 9th wicket.

CSA provides medical update on Temba Bavuma

The update from CSA states: “Following continuous medical assessments, it was determined there was too much of a risk of aggravating his injury had he gone out to bat at this stage of the game. The medical team are managing him to give him the best chance to bat should he be required in the 4th innings.”

This is not the first time Bavuma suffered a hamstring injury, as he also faced a niggle ahead of a South Africa vs Australia 2023 ODI World Cup semi-final and played through the match with the injury.

India finished at 62/3 at Tea in their second innings on Day 3. South African pacers removed Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal for 0 and 5 runs, respectively, while Shubman Gill was dismissed after scoring 26 runs.

The Indian team will be relying on Virat Kohli to help them cross South Africa’s lead and set up a competitive target to give themselves a chance to win the match.

India has not won a Test series in South Africa for the past 31 years and has won just two Tests from the last six played in South Africa. In 2021, the Indian team had the best chance of ending their drought but lost the last two games after winning the first match in Centurion.

The Indian team won the ODI series against the Proteas by 2-1, while the T20I series ended in a 1-1 draw.
