‘Darlings of Italian football’ – how Atalanta salvaged national pride

When last season’s Champions League runners-up Inter Milan were eliminated by Bodo/Glimt on Tuesday night, alarm bells began ringing across Italian football. For a brief moment, it looked as though Serie A could be heading toward an unwanted and historic low point in Europe’s elite club competition.

With Atalanta trailing by two goals after their first leg and Juventus three goals behind in their own tie, the possibility of having no Italian clubs in the Champions League last 16 became very real. Such an outcome would have been unprecedented in the modern era and had not happened since the 1987-88 season, back when the tournament was still known as the European Cup. The mere thought of that scenario caused concern among fans, pundits, and analysts throughout the country.

Ultimately, Juventus were unable to complete their comeback, despite a spirited effort against Galatasaray. However, Atalanta rose to the occasion in dramatic fashion, rescuing Italian football from what many feared would be a continental embarrassment. Facing a daunting 2-0 deficit from the first leg against Borussia Dortmund, the Bergamo-based side produced a remarkable turnaround.

Atalanta scored three goals within 57 minutes to flip the tie on its head. Just when it appeared that Karim Adeyemi’s goal would send the contest into extra time, Atalanta were awarded a last-gasp penalty. The conversion of that spot-kick sealed a stunning comeback and ensured that at least one Italian club would take its place in the last 16.

Defender Davide Zappacosta reflected on the triumph by acknowledging how many observers had dismissed their chances. He emphasized the resilience and unity within the squad, stating that the team never stopped believing, even when others had written them off. For Atalanta, the victory was not just about progression but about proving their character on the European stage.

The significance of Atalanta’s success extends far beyond one dramatic evening. Since the Champions League reintroduced the last-16 knockout phase in the 2003-04 season, Italian football has always been represented in that round. The prospect of breaking that long-standing streak was deeply troubling for a league proud of its European heritage. Not since 1987-88, when Napoli were eliminated in the first round by Real Madrid, had Serie A failed to send at least one team into the competition’s decisive stages.

After Inter’s exit, several Italian football commentators described the situation in bleak terms. Journalist Vincenzo Credendino labelled the potential absence of Italian clubs as one of the worst chapters in recent football history for the nation. Fellow reporter Daniele Verri warned that a collective failure from Inter, Juventus, and Atalanta would represent a complete disaster for Italian clubs and their standing in Europe.

Fortunately for Serie A, Atalanta’s determination prevented that narrative from becoming reality. Their progress not only keeps Italy’s presence alive in the tournament but also restores some pride at a moment when it seemed to be slipping away. However, the path ahead will not be easy. In the next round, they are set to face either Arsenal or Bayern Munich, two of Europe’s most formidable sides.

Despite the challenge awaiting them, Atalanta’s comeback against Dortmund demonstrated a level of belief and cohesion that could make them competitive against any opponent. Former defender Curtis Davies described them as the new darlings of Italian football, suggesting that their underdog story resonates strongly with supporters. European football expert James Horncastle compared them to Bodo/Glimt in spirit, highlighting how they have transformed from a yo-yo club into a consistent presence in continental competitions over the past eight years.

Indeed, Atalanta’s rise has been one of the most compelling stories in modern Italian football. Once known primarily for fluctuating between divisions, they have established themselves as a stable force in Serie A. In addition to reaching multiple Coppa Italia finals, they captured the Europa League title in 2024, marking the first major European trophy in the club’s history.

While Inter and Juventus boast five European Cup or Champions League titles between them, Atalanta’s European pedigree is relatively modest. They made their Champions League debut only in 2019 but have already reached the last 16 on two occasions. Their most memorable run came during their debut campaign, when they advanced to the quarter-finals, surprising many observers.

However, their recent appearances had ended in disappointment, with early exits preventing them from building sustained momentum. That context made their comeback against Dortmund even more remarkable. Not only were they facing a two-goal deficit, but they had also never overturned such a margin in a European tie before.

The psychological hurdle was immense. After battling back to lead 3-2 on aggregate, Adeyemi’s strike threatened to undo all their hard work. Yet Atalanta refused to crumble under pressure. The late penalty, calmly converted amid intense tension, symbolized their mental strength as much as their technical ability.

Head coach Raffaele Palladino described the night as unforgettable and a dream realized. He praised his players for delivering a performance filled with courage, intensity, and passion. According to him, the team embodied the distinctive Atalanta style — fearless, energetic, and committed — which ultimately earned them their reward.

Captain Marten de Roon echoed those sentiments, stating that the squad understood the need for a near-perfect display. He noted that they balanced defensive discipline with attacking ambition, suffering when necessary and striking at key moments. In his view, the result was fully deserved because of the team’s tactical awareness and relentless effort.

For Italian football as a whole, Atalanta’s progression offers a welcome boost. In recent years, Serie A has worked hard to restore its competitive image on the European stage. While Inter’s run to last season’s final showcased the league’s potential, the early exits this year had threatened to undermine that progress. Atalanta’s resilience ensures that Italy remains part of the Champions League narrative, at least for another round.

Moreover, there is a unique feel-good factor attached to Atalanta’s success. Unlike traditional giants such as Juventus or Inter, they do not carry the same historical expectations. Their achievements feel organic and earned, making their journey particularly inspiring for neutral observers and Italian fans alike.

As they prepare for their next challenge against either Arsenal or Bayern Munich, Atalanta will draw confidence from the spirit they displayed against Dortmund. Regardless of how far they advance, their comeback has already secured a meaningful place in this season’s European story.

In rescuing Italian football from an unwanted piece of history, Atalanta have not only preserved a proud tradition but also reinforced their own growing reputation as a fearless competitor on the continental stage.
