Alexander-Arnold fails to ease Tuchel concerns as Kane stars

England head coach Thomas Tuchel made a strategic visit to Madrid as part of his ongoing preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, and he was treated to a captivating UEFA Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. The match, played at the iconic Santiago Bernabeu, offered Tuchel the perfect opportunity to closely evaluate several key England players ahead of the global tournament.

Tuchel’s primary focus during this high-profile encounter was on three crucial figures: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jude Bellingham, and England captain Harry Kane. Each player represents a different dimension of England’s tactical setup, and their performances in such a demanding environment provided valuable insights into their readiness and role for the World Cup campaign, which begins against Croatia in Arlington on June 17.

The atmosphere in Madrid added to the occasion. Champions League nights at the Bernabeu are renowned for their electric energy, and this match was no exception. Hours before kickoff, fans gathered in large numbers around the stadium, with thousands dressed in white assembling in nearby plazas to welcome the Real Madrid team bus. The sense of anticipation was palpable, and nature itself seemed to play a part in heightening the drama, as a warm afternoon suddenly gave way to dark skies and heavy rain shortly before the match began.

As the game unfolded, it delivered both excitement and valuable lessons for Tuchel. Bayern Munich emerged as deserved 2-1 winners in what proved to be a thrilling contest. However, the performances of the players under Tuchel’s scrutiny varied significantly, offering a mix of reassurance and concern.

Among the trio, Alexander-Arnold stood out as the most intriguing case. Now playing for Real Madrid after his move from Liverpool, the 27-year-old remains one of the most technically gifted players in England’s pool. Yet despite his talent, he currently appears to be on the fringes of Tuchel’s plans for the World Cup.

Alexander-Arnold’s situation has been complicated by his omission from England’s recent squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. Even more telling was Tuchel’s decision to call up Ben White as a replacement instead, despite White’s limited appearances for Arsenal and his previous absence from international duty following the 2022 World Cup.

This backdrop made Alexander-Arnold’s performance against Bayern Munich particularly significant. Unfortunately for him, his display was inconsistent. In the first half, he struggled to maintain possession and was guilty of several misplaced passes. At one point, he nearly gifted Bayern a goal with a careless pass that fell to Michael Olise. His defensive vulnerabilities were further exposed when he was caught off guard by former Liverpool teammate Luis Diaz, who capitalized to score Bayern’s opening goal.

These moments seemed to validate Tuchel’s previously expressed concerns about Alexander-Arnold’s defensive reliability. However, the right-back also demonstrated the qualities that make him such a unique player. As Real Madrid attempted to mount a comeback, he delivered a series of dangerous set-pieces and provided a precise low cross that allowed Kylian Mbappe to score.

This duality—brilliance in attack but inconsistency in defense—has long defined Alexander-Arnold’s career. His pass completion rate of just 69.2%, the lowest in the match, further highlighted his uneven performance. For Tuchel, this outing may have reinforced existing doubts rather than changing his perspective.

In contrast, Bellingham’s contribution, though limited in minutes, was highly impactful. The young midfielder started the match on the bench as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury. However, he was introduced after an hour, at a time when Real Madrid were struggling to assert themselves.

Bellingham’s arrival injected energy and urgency into the team. His trademark driving runs and ability to carry the ball forward transformed Real Madrid’s approach, creating momentum and putting pressure on Bayern’s defense. In a chaotic final 30 minutes, he played a pivotal role in shifting the tempo of the game.

For Tuchel, Bellingham represents both a key asset and a selection dilemma. The competition for England’s number 10 role is fierce, with players like Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, and Eberechi Eze all vying for a place. However, Bellingham’s ability to influence games at the highest level makes him difficult to overlook.

His cameo performance against Bayern served as a reminder of his immense potential and importance. Even in limited time, he demonstrated qualities that could be निर्णative on the world stage. Tuchel, known for making bold decisions, may still find it hard to leave Bellingham out of his starting lineup when the World Cup begins.

If Bellingham’s role presents a selection challenge, Kane’s importance is beyond debate. England’s all-time leading scorer, with 78 goals in 112 appearances, remains the focal point of both club and country attacks. Any concerns surrounding him are purely related to fitness rather than ability.

Kane had recently missed matches due to injury, raising concerns about his availability. England’s struggles without him in friendlies against Uruguay and Japan underscored his value, as the team appeared far less effective in attack.

However, Kane returned to Bayern Munich’s starting lineup for this crucial match, receiving a warm reception from traveling supporters. While he appeared slightly off the pace in the first half, this was not unexpected given his recent absence.

Then, shortly after halftime, Kane delivered a moment of pure quality. Receiving the ball around 20 yards from goal, he struck a precise low shot into the corner, leaving goalkeeper Andriy Lunin with no chance. It was a goal that encapsulated his clinical finishing ability and reaffirmed his status as one of the world’s elite strikers.

After the match, Kane acknowledged the challenge of playing in Madrid and praised both teams for their performances. He emphasized Bayern’s confidence and attacking threat, noting that they always believe they can score.

For Tuchel, Kane’s display would have been particularly reassuring. It reinforced the notion that England’s hopes of success at the World Cup are closely tied to their captain’s presence and performance. The idea of entering the tournament without Kane is almost unthinkable, given his influence and consistency.

In conclusion, Tuchel’s visit to Madrid proved highly informative. The match offered a clear snapshot of where key players stand ahead of the World Cup. While Alexander-Arnold’s inconsistencies may have hindered his chances, Bellingham’s dynamism and Kane’s reliability highlighted their importance to England’s ambitions.

As preparations continue, Tuchel will need to make difficult decisions, balancing form, fitness, and tactical considerations. However, one thing is certain: performances like these will play a crucial role in shaping England’s journey on football’s biggest stage.
