Jamie Murray was able to enjoy a great homecoming back to Great Britain as the crucial Davis Cup doubles rubber match has been won against the Uzbekistan in Glasgow.
Murray who just came back from his US Open Doubles wins with his partner Bethanie Mattek Sands; ahs now defeated the Uzbekistan Denis Istomin and Sanjar Fayziev by teaming up with Dom Inglot.
The won the match in two hours and 54 minutes and with this Great Britain has 2-1 lead for the reverse Singles of Sunday.
There is no relegation at stake as the Davis Cup is going to be revamped in the coming year. However Leon Smith still needs a crucial victory in the tie that will ensure him being seeded in the upcoming February qualifying tournament.
Glasgow crowd tried to support their men with rousing reception but they fell flat in the opening round as Murray allowed the Uzbek do to claim the opening set with a solitary drop of serve.
Doubles which are pivotal in Davis Cup, the tension rose by multitude in the second set.
Inglot was making serve with his usual 130mph but the returns were average at best.
The set was set for a tie break point. Istomin gave the point to Great Britain team with a flurry of poor service and unforced errors leading the Murray and Inglot to level the match.
After two hours the first break of the match was gained by Murray with a sliced backhand against Fayziev’s serve.
The double break was again secure by Fayziev’s serve and Murray managed to take the set again.
Murray told media after the match, “We were fighting hard in the first couple of sets but were not able to find any break. We were intensely close to being two sets to love down, but we managed to calm ourselves down and played really well for the last two sets”.
