Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal in his match of the ATP singles final playing for Team Serbia. With his win, Serbia was able to remain in contention to win the ATP Cup.
After winning the singles, the game entered the deciding doubles match where Djokovic once more made appearance pairing up with his friend and teammate Viktor Troicki as they on the ATP Cup; first-ever for the country.
In the country where the 7 times winner of the Australian Open played like he was playing at home while being away from home, Djokovic was the main figure of the 24-team and 10-day tournament off ATP Cup.
Djokovic, who credited his win to thousands of cheering Serbs at the football stadium, said, “I have never ever received such support in any of my previous matches no matter where I played ad let me tell you, I have played in some really big stadiums of tennis. But all of this was something really different. I sincerely thank everyone for contributing their enthusiasm for my victory here and off the court.”
World rank no. 2 Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal in his singles of ATP Cup by 6-2 and 7-6 after Roberto Bautista Agut defeated Dusan Lajovic in their singles match by 7-5 and 6-1 to give 1-0 lead to Spain.
After improving his career record against Nadal by 29-26, he moved on for team Serbia once more to play in the deciding doubles final on the hard-court. In his pairing with teammate Troicki, they both defeated Spain’s doubles team of Feliciano Lopez and Pablo Carreno Busta by 6-3 and 6-4. With this, they won the ATP Cup final by 2-1.
Djokovic said, “I am going to remember this experience for the rest of my life as this was one of the nicest in my whole career. I have been blessed with an amazing life and career and have enjoyed the best career in tennis for the last 15 years. However, to play for my country with some of the best friends is something that cannot be matched. It is simply too special.”
