During ultramarathon race held in Italy, a Marathoner died after getting struck by the lightning

The extreme weather in Italy last week became the reason for the death of a 44 years old woman who hailed from Norway. She was participating in the ultramarathon on Saturday last week when she was struck by a lightning bolt and died.

According to the release of the Südtirol Ultra Skyrace on their Facebook page, the horrific and bizarre incident occurred at about 7:15 pm on Saturday near the Lago di San Pancrazio Lake.

Due to the dangerous weather prompts, the organizers of the race were forced to stop the race 30 minutes prior to the set time. Still many of the runners like the unfortunate woman were in between the aid stations and had no way of knowing that the race was stopped.

Runners nearby the woman who saw the lighting strike called the emergency services who then transported the lady to the Bolzano Hospital via airlift but she sadly succumbed to her deadly injuries.

One of the members of the race’s organizing committee named Josef Günther Mair said, “We are both shocked and deeply shaken by this horrific and tragic accident. We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the athlete.”

The name of the victim is yet to be disclosed.
