Elina Svitolina, the defending champion of the WTA Finals tournament has successfully managed to move into the semifinals of the season, last WTA Finals following her 7-5, and 6-3 win against Simona Halep on Wednesday night.
Elina Svitolina is the only one of the 8 players in the WTA Finals to not have won a single title this season but she definitely won the WTA Finals last season.
Elina Svitolina said of her win, “I try to work hard for every single point and I start by working for taking one point at a time. I do not try to think about if it’s a good point or a bad point. I only try to step up into the court with a positive mindset.”
As for one of the red group matches between Karolina Pliskova and Canada’s Bianca Andreescu, it was a walkover win for Pliskova following her opponent’s left knee injury. This allowed for Pliskova, who is currently 1-1 in the group, to be facing against Simona Halep up next in the group’s final match for a spot in the semi-finals.
Pliskova said of this next match, “I think that this is going to be a great match before I end this group and move onto the semifinals. Tennis with Simona, I always feel that it is good to watch.”
Talking about her defeat, Halep said, “I feel that I cannot finish the points as this court is not great for me and for my game. It is really very soft in a certain way. Even if you try and hit strong you do not get enough directions. Still, Elina played really well and he did not miss her shots. I think that she loves playing here and this is her style.”
As for Andreescu, she got injured during the first seat with a lead of 2-0 where Pliskova was taking a lead of 30-15 in the third game of the first set.
Andreescu said of her injury, “I stepped weirdly on one turn and heard my knee cracking and also it went a little inwards. And when I paled some pressure on it, it bothered me really very much. Now I can barely move my knee.”
