Errol Spence Jr. defeats Mikey Garcia to retain his IBF welterweight title

The IBF World Welterweight title fight between Errol Spencer Jr. and Mikey Garcia ended with Errol’s win by unanimous points decision to remain undefeated champion. This was the third defense fight for Errol Spencer Jr.

Garcia managed to move up 2 weight classes on Saturday night in order to fight against Spencer Jr. However, the night was not good for him as he took one hell of a beating but still did not go down. Garcia who was clearly fatigued in the closing rounds; still managed to block punches instead of landing his own.

With the three judges giving Spencer Jr. his victory, his record is now 25-0. One judge gave him a score of 120-107 while the other 2 judges age him 120-108.

Despite winning the match, this was the first fight of his career that Spencer Jr. had to go as far as till the end.

Garcia who had moved up from 135 to 147 pounds in his effort to be the 5-0division champion lost the first of his40 professional fights.

In this fight, Spencer Jr. managed to land 345 out of the total 1082 punches and this also includes 237 of the powerful punches. This fight was the second defense fight for Spencer Jr. at his hometown of North Texas in the span of 9 months.

At one point during the 9th round, Spencer Jr. walked Mikey Garcia around the whole ring while delivering some heavy blows.

As for Garcia, this was his first fight after his unanimous points win that gave him the unified tile belts for IBF and WBC World lightweight titles back in July last year when he won over Robert Easter. He came to this fight hoping to become the 5-division champion.

Manny Pacquiao, the 5-division champion was also sitting at the AT&T Stadium and is a potential next opponent for Spencer Jr. the 40 years old Manny Pacquiao plans his return to the ring in July.
