Federer, Nadal and Osaka all move forward into the Italian Open

On Thursday at the Italian Open, top players Nadal, Federer, and Osaka have all moved into the second round of the tournament after winning their matches.

The play was backed up on Wednesday due to rainy weather which resulted in the contenders to save up some energy to contend for the tournament in their best condition.

Federer, in his match against Joao Sousa, managed to save 7 break points to win over his opponent by 6-4 and 6-3. He will next face Borna Coric in the third round match for his bid to be in the quarterfinals.

Federer said, “one good thing about this match was that it was not that much physical. As for Borna, he is a tough player and I have lost to him in a couple of years.”

Federer in this match hit 25 winners while his opponent only hit 8 winners.

As for the 8-time champion of the tournament, Rafael Nadal also won over his opponent Jeremy Chardy by 6-0 and 6-1 and is now going to play the third round match against Nikoloz Basilashvili.

On the other hand, world no. 1 Novak Djokovic suffered the 2nd round exit against Denis Shapovalov by 6-1 and 6-3 who will now face the winner of the match between Philipp Kohlschreiber and  Marco Ceccinato.

In the women’s singles, Naomi Osaka defeated Dominika Cibulkova by 6-3 and 6-3 and will play against Mihaela Buzarnescu next.  If Osaka manages to reach the quarterfinals, she will once more be the world rank no. 1.

Osaka said of her match, “My serve was really good. During this match, I tried to be really calm.”

Other players for men’s singles are Kei Nishikori, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jan-Lennard Struff, and Diego Schwartzman.

As for Women’s singles players advancing in the third round, they are Kiki Bertens, Johanna Konta, Petra Kvitova, Kristina Mladenovic and Garbine Muguruza.
