The drought of the Fed Cup for team France was ended by an impressive performance from Kristina Mladenovic as she gave her team a brilliant 3-2 win at the final.
Mladenovic in the doubles decisive match with her partner Caroline Garcia took on the Fed Cup’s Australian duo of Ashleigh Barty and Samantha Stosur to beat them at Perth by 6-4 and 6-3. She also managed to deliver an impressive performance in her match against Australia’s Ashleigh Barty to beat her and give France a lead of 2-1 at the Fed Cup final.
As for Barty, her most impressive season to date ended in heartbreak after only 1 week of her winning the biggest prize of tennis which is 4.4 million dollars at the Shenzhen for the WTA Finals.
The former doubles duo of French open Mladenovic and her partner Garcia were able to break down their opponents 3 times in order for the Team France to win their 3 titles of Fed Cup and their first one since 2003.
This was also a redemption match for Garcia and Mladenovic who had lost the decisive doubles match back in 2016’s Fed Cup Final against the Czech Republic.
Mladenovic of her Fed Cup win, “I got to share a lot of emotions with Garcia after we failed to win the final 3 years ago. We just were wishing to take out some revenge on ourselves.”
Before this win, Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, the world rank no. 51 reprimanded for her loss against Mladenovic to beat France’s Pauline Parmentier by 6-4 and 7-3.
Julien Benneteau, the coach of team France chose Parmentier over Garcia, who had previously failed to win her singles match against Barty. They were trying to finish the Fed Cup final with a tie against Australia.
Earlier in the opening singles, Mladenovic had defeated Barty by 2-6, 6-4 and 7-6.
Now next up there will be a revamped Fed Cup which will have 12 teams playing for 6 days for a prize sum of 18 million dollars. The contest will be played on the clay courts located in Budapest, Hungary.
