Great Britain managed to win themselves their first Fed Cup promotion in the last 26 years after Johanna Konta and Katie Boulter both got their wins over their Kazakhstan opponents. With this, they have sealed the spot for Great Britain in the World Group II.
Konta managed to make a comeback from her two breaks down to win over her opponent Yulia Putitnseva by 4-6, 6-2 and 7-5 while Katie Boulter defeated Zarina Diyas by 6-7, 6-4 and 6-1.
With this 3-1 playoff victory, Great Britain is now going to compete at the Fed Cup’s world table. This is going to be their first time after the format was changed back in 1995.
Anne Keothavong, The captain of Great Britain team said, “Amazing, the performance from the players this weekend was truly heroic. It was some fantastic tennis and this has been an unforgettable weekend.”
Konta, who with this win has won 11 straight singles matches of the competition said, “As a young girl and as an athlete to make it to the top of your sport, you can only dream about this kind of stuff. Gosh, that was one hell of a match.”
As for Boulter, she said, “I was just coming out here trying to grab a win for the team. Johanna did such a great job. I am so proud of these girls or what they have done. I also just wanted to make them proud. I think it showed my gratitude yesterday as to how much it means to me. I was so nervous but I came back and I am happy about it.”
With this win, Great Brittan has secured itself a place in the World Group II despite the format of the next season for the competition is yet to be decided.
The proposals for the 12-team format of the revamped Fed Cup are at an advanced stage by now.
