Roger Federer, who is bidding to win his record 10th title at the grass-court of the Halle Open tournament, made a winning start of his campaign.
The top-seeded player of the tournament, as well as the 20-time Grand Slam champion, needed a tie break to win his first set against Australia’s John Millman before winning the game by 7-6 and 6-3.
With this win, he will now face the wildcard of the tournament, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who won his match against the Frenchman Benoit Paire by 6-4 and 7-5.
Federer has faced Tsonga 17 times with him taking a lead of 11-4. Still, Tsonga has won their last of the 2 meetings with one being at the 2016’s Monte Carlo Masters and the other at the 2014’s Rogers Cup held in Toronto.
In other matches of the day, the 4th seeded Borna Coric defeated Spain’s Jaume Munar by 7-6 and 6-3 while Roberto Bautista Agut won over the American teenager Taylor Fritz by 7-6 and 6-0.
