Rain proved to be the factor in the abandoning of India’s match against New Zealand at the world cup as the match went out without a ball being bowled.
For a world cup record, up to 4 games have been now called off due to weather. The latest ground to suffer from bad weather was Trent Bridge that left the ground sodden outfield due to rain.
The hopes to play the match diminished as the day passed and by 3 PM which was four and half hours after the scheduled time of the game that each team took one point each and shook hands with each other.
At the time of the toss near 10 PM, heavy clouds started gathering along with 24 hours prior heavy rain led to pitch inspection and a delayed start.
With continuous downpour, the efforts of the ground staff were hindered as they were called for hourly inspection until 2:30 pm.
All the inspections were led to no vain after more rain and the match was finally called off.
With each team getting one point, New Zealand stands at the top of the table with 7 points while India holds the 3rd place with 5 points.
Viraat Kohli, India’s team captain said, “due to the outfield not being fully fit for play, it was a sensible decision to not play. For the sides that have so far won all of their game, 1 point is not bad. So we will take it.”
For New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, he seemed not too worried about the gap which he instead appreciated before his team’s clash against South Africa.
He said, “South Africa is a very good team and they let us know every time we play them. They are an extremely competitive team. Now we have a few days to be refreshed and come back.”
