If these were the Tuchel trials, Foden – among others – failed

Phil Foden endured a frustrating and painful night during England’s 1-1 friendly draw against Uruguay, leaving his hopes of securing a place in the upcoming World Cup squad hanging in the balance. The Manchester City playmaker was seen at full-time with England head coach Thomas Tuchel offering words of comfort, a moment that summed up an evening that failed to go his way both physically and professionally.

The 25-year-old’s disappointment was evident. Not only did he struggle to influence the game, but he also suffered a heavy and reckless challenge from Uruguay defender Ronald Araujo that left him clutching his ankle in visible pain. Although the tackle went unpunished, it added to an already difficult outing for Foden, who had been handed a valuable opportunity to impress.

Tuchel had selected Foden to start in the crucial attacking midfield role, placing him ahead of Cole Palmer in the battle for the coveted number 10 position. With intense competition in that area of the pitch, this match was seen as a significant audition. However, instead of seizing the moment, Foden struggled to make any meaningful impact.

Facing a well-organised and technically gifted Uruguay side, managed by Marcelo Bielsa, Foden found himself repeatedly crowded out of central areas. He was often forced to drop deeper into midfield to get on the ball, but this adjustment did little to improve his effectiveness. His performance lacked the creativity and attacking spark typically associated with his game.

The concern for Foden is that this may have been one of his final chances to impress Tuchel before the World Cup squad is finalized. With time running out, failing to stand out in such an important fixture could prove costly for his international ambitions.

In contrast, Palmer made a strong impression after coming off the bench. His lively display injected energy into England’s attack, highlighting the difference between the two players on the night. Palmer created a clear scoring opportunity for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who surprisingly headed wide from close range. He also played a key role in England’s goal, delivering the corner that led to Ben White finding the net.

Foden is currently facing challenges on multiple fronts. At club level, he is working to secure a consistent starting role under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Despite starting 21 of the team’s 30 Premier League matches this season, his early-season form has dipped in recent weeks.

Internationally, his position is far from secure. England boasts a wealth of attacking talent, particularly in the areas where Foden operates. This makes it essential for him to deliver standout performances when given the opportunity—something he was unable to do against Uruguay.

Tuchel acknowledged that Foden could have shown more initiative during the game. He suggested that the midfielder needed to take greater risks and play more boldly in advanced positions. However, the nature of the match itself—a scrappy and physical contest—did not lend itself well to creative players thriving.

Despite his struggles, Foden can count himself fortunate to have avoided serious injury following Araujo’s dangerous challenge. Nonetheless, the incident served as a reminder of the physical demands of international football and the fine margins that can define a player’s performance.

Palmer’s strong cameo only intensified the scrutiny on Foden. The Chelsea midfielder has consistently shown glimpses of his potential in England colors, including his memorable goal in the Euro 2024 final against Spain. His ability to make an immediate impact may give him an edge in the selection race.

Foden’s situation is further complicated by the presence of Jude Bellingham, who has established himself as a key figure in England’s attacking setup. During Euro 2024, Foden was often shifted out of his preferred position to accommodate Bellingham, leading to questions about his role within the team.

Tuchel now has several options for the number 10 role. Alongside Bellingham, Morgan Rogers has emerged as a strong contender, thanks to his impressive performances for both club and country. This competition makes it increasingly difficult for Foden to secure a starting spot.

Beyond the central role, England also have depth on the wings. Marcus Rashford showed flashes of quality against Uruguay, while Anthony Gordon is currently viewed as a leading candidate for a starting position. Noni Madueke also offers versatility across both flanks.

Tuchel has even hinted at the possibility of using Foden as a backup striker to captain Harry Kane. However, this idea appears unlikely to materialize, as deploying Foden in such a role at a major tournament would be a significant gamble.

The overall performance from England made it difficult for any player to truly shine. Former goalkeeper Paul Robinson summed up the situation by suggesting that no one on the pitch made a compelling case for inclusion in the World Cup squad.

One player who did enhance his chances was Harry Maguire. Recalled to the team, the Manchester United defender delivered a composed performance, including two crucial blocks late in the game. With concerns over the fitness of John Stones, Maguire’s experience could prove valuable.

Goalkeeper James Trafford had a quiet debut, while James Garner impressed with a steady performance in midfield. However, whether Garner has done enough to secure a place remains uncertain.

In attack, Dominic Solanke worked tirelessly but did not produce a decisive moment. Meanwhile, Calvert-Lewin will likely regret his missed opportunity, which could have changed the outcome of the match.

The spotlight also fell on Ben White, whose return to international football sparked mixed reactions from fans. Having stepped away from the national team after the 2022 World Cup, his comeback was met with audible jeers when he entered the pitch.

However, White quickly turned the narrative around by scoring England’s opening goal from close range. For a brief moment, he appeared set to be the match-winner. But the drama continued, as he conceded a late penalty after a challenge on Federico Vinas. Following a VAR review, Federico Valverde converted the spot-kick in stoppage time to secure a draw for Uruguay.

White’s return was anything but low-key, marking his first England appearance since March 2022. His eventful contribution ensured he remained at the center of attention throughout the match.

As England prepares for their next friendly against Japan at Wembley, there is a lingering sense that this was a missed opportunity for many players. For Foden in particular, the night may prove pivotal in determining his World Cup fate, as competition intensifies and time runs out to impress.
