Woods bailed after arrest following crash

Golf icon Tiger Woods has been released on bail after being arrested in Florida following a car accident that led to charges of driving under the influence (DUI). The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in Jupiter Island, where Woods reportedly lost control of his vehicle and overturned his Land Rover after colliding with another vehicle.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the 15-time major champion now faces several misdemeanor charges. These include driving under the influence, causing property damage, and refusing to comply with a lawful request for a chemical test. Authorities confirmed that Woods was taken into custody and remained in jail for approximately eight hours, which is the minimum detention period required under Florida law for such offenses, before being granted bail.

Sheriff John Budensiek provided further details about the accident, explaining that Woods attempted to overtake a pressure-cleaning truck at a high speed. During this maneuver, he clipped the truck, which caused his vehicle to roll over. Despite the severity of the crash, no injuries were reported, and Woods managed to crawl out of the vehicle through the passenger-side door.

Law enforcement officers at the scene initially conducted a breathalyzer test, which Woods passed with a reading of zero, indicating no alcohol in his system. However, authorities noted that while alcohol was not suspected to be a factor, Woods displayed signs of impairment that led officers to believe another substance might have been involved. This prompted further investigation by DUI specialists.

Budensiek explained that officers carried out multiple roadside sobriety tests. Woods reportedly cooperated with the process but also appeared cautious about making statements that could be used against him. While he acknowledged his history of injuries and surgeries, which may have affected his physical performance during testing, officers still determined there were sufficient grounds to arrest him.

A key issue in the case is Woods’ refusal to submit to a urine test, which could have provided more definitive evidence regarding the presence of drugs or other substances. Although he has the legal right to refuse such testing, this decision resulted in an additional charge. As a result, authorities may never be able to conclusively determine what caused his apparent impairment at the time of the crash.

The incident has drawn significant public attention, including comments from Donald Trump, who expressed concern for Woods. Trump described him as a close friend and praised him as an extraordinary individual, stating that he felt sympathy for Woods following the accident.

This latest development marks another challenging chapter in Woods’ life and career, which have been marked by both extraordinary achievements and personal setbacks. Over the past two decades, Woods has battled numerous injuries that have limited his ability to compete consistently at the highest level.

One of the most serious incidents occurred in 2021 when Woods was involved in a near-fatal car crash that left him with severe leg injuries. The recovery process was long and difficult, and many questioned whether he would ever return to professional golf. Despite these challenges, Woods demonstrated remarkable resilience by making a comeback and continuing to participate in select events.

However, this is not the first time Woods has faced legal issues related to driving. In 2017, he was found asleep behind the wheel of his car near his Florida home. A subsequent toxicology report revealed the presence of several prescription medications as well as THC, the active component in marijuana. Woods later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was sentenced to probation.

An even earlier incident in 2009 also brought intense media scrutiny when Woods crashed his car near his home. That event triggered a series of personal revelations, including allegations of infidelity, which ultimately led to the end of his marriage and the loss of several high-profile sponsorship deals.

Despite these challenges, Woods has continued to build one of the most decorated careers in golf history. He has won 82 PGA Tour events, tying him with Sam Snead for the all-time record, and has secured 15 major championships. Among his most memorable victories are his five wins at the Masters Tournament held at Augusta National.

His triumph at the 2019 Masters is widely regarded as one of the greatest comebacks in sports history. After years of injuries and personal struggles, Woods defied expectations to claim another major title, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest golfers of all time.

Recently, Woods has been working toward another return to competitive golf. He has been recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon sustained in March 2025, as well as undergoing back surgery later that year. Earlier this week, he participated in the TGL indoor league finals, marking his first competitive appearance in over a year.

At the time, Woods had not ruled out competing in the upcoming Masters Tournament. However, following this latest incident, his chances of participating appear increasingly uncertain. With the tournament just weeks away, the combination of legal issues and ongoing recovery from injuries may prevent him from being ready in time.

Golf correspondent Iain Carter described the situation as a significant setback for Woods, noting that the veteran golfer has been striving to regain fitness in hopes of competing at Augusta once again. Although Woods showed determination by returning to practice and competition, the recent events in Florida have cast doubt over his immediate future in the sport.

Carter added that while Woods did not appear overly confident about his readiness for the Masters even before the accident, he was clearly motivated to try. Now, given the circumstances, it seems unlikely that he will be able to compete in one of golf’s most प्रतिष्ठित tournaments.

As the legal process unfolds, the focus will remain on the outcome of the charges against Woods and how they may impact both his personal life and professional career. While the charges are classified as misdemeanors rather than felonies, they still represent a serious issue that could have lasting consequences.

For fans and observers around the world, this incident serves as another reminder of the challenges faced by even the most accomplished athletes. Woods’ journey has been defined by both extraordinary success and significant adversity, and this latest episode adds to the complex narrative of his life both on and off the golf course.
