In a shocking turn of event, the two top world-ranked players Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka are out of the tournament. However, the British no.1 Kyle Edmund Still progresses into the last 16 of Indian Wells.
Djokovic got his defeat at hands of Philipp Kohlschreiber by 6-4 and 6-4 while Osaka suffered a defeat at hands of Belinda Bencic by 6-3 and 6-1.
As for Edmund, he got his win over the qualifier Radu Albot in straight sets victory by 6-3 and 6-3. He will now be facing Rodger Federer in the quarterfinals.
Before their encounter, World no. 1 Djokovic had a career record of 8-1 against Kohlschreiber but failed to notice the changes in the game this time. As for Kohlschreiber, this was his first win over the no. 1 tennis player. Next, Kohlschreiber will be playing against Gael Monfils in the fourth round.
The match between Djokovic and Kohlschreiber for the third round was halted earlier night due to rain. After the defeat, Djokovic also paid his congratulations to the opponent’s ability for adapting to different conditions very well.
Djokovic said, “I like my chances against Kohlschreiber more at night but it was not meant to be at night. Conditions were totally different today. I sincerely congratulate him for playing so well a he got me out of my comfort zone. He deserved this win.”
As for Kyle Edmund, who demolished his opponent Nicolas Jerry in mere 52 minutes in the second round match, was still as ruthless in his match against Albot.
With this loss, the nine-match winning streak of Radu Albot comes to an end. This loss is followed by 29-year-old first maiden tour title of his career which he claimed at Delray Beach last month.
As for the women’s competition, the current world no. 1 Naomi Osaka followed the Simona Halep in the defeated group in the fourth round. She got her loss at hands of Belinda Bencic.
Against the Swiss player, Osaka never managed to find out her rhythm and the defending champion got defeated in only 1 hour.
