In the opening session of the Laver Cup, European team’s Kyle Edmund gained a 2-0 lead over the Team World on Friday.
Despite that Edmund was making his first debut in the tournament, this World No. 16 did not show any sign of weakness or nervousness. Instead he showed immense talent on the court while being nourished by cheering support from European bench that contained players like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Under all the cheering he sealed the match against Jack Sock by 6-4, 5-7.
Americans on the other had made their way to Laver Cup by winning back to back doubles titles at Grand Slam events like Wimbledon and US Open.
Edmund with his wits was able to take opportunity of Sock’s lack of confidence to gain himself a first set. However things turned difficult for British’s No.1 as Sock rallied to level things in the second set.
The match went into a deadlock with a tie breaker situation. It was Edmund who was able to muster up his best game in a stunning fashion to claim victory for the Bjorn Borg’s side.
Edmund after match talked to media and said, “When you turn around and look at the locker room, you see world class quality players there. For me a 23 years old player, to be part of this is really amazing. This opportunity came to me suddenly and now I am cherishing it very much. I felt like I was dominating in the first set but then the second set got away from me. To win I went a bit aggressive in the tie break.”
