Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was the one to lead the Lazio’s win over the Atalanta in the Italian Cup by 2-0 after he scored a goal moments he got off the bench on Wednesday. With this Lazio has won the Italian Cup.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was making his return to the match after following an injury and he broke the deadlock between the teams during the 82nd minutes of the game as headed to the corner.
Joaquin Correa also cemented the lead of Lazio in the final minute as he scored a goal following a counterattack from Atalanta.
Marten de Roon from Atalanta side hit the ball at the spot during the first half of the thrilling match but his shot was blocked by Bastos, the defender of Lazio. However a video assistant referee called the shot to be involuntary as it was at a too close of a range.
Gian Piero Gasperini, coach of Atalanta was furious still after he was shown the replay video of the play and said during a television interview, “I was not angry before I saw the play as for the bench I could not really see it happen. But that was a serious error as the shot was going in and it is totally unacceptable. If there was not any VAR, then it would have been totally understandable. But this is unjustifiable.”
This win has also ended a disappointing season for Lazio after their hopes to qualify for the Champions League ended when they lost recently to Atalanta.
After the final whistle was blown, several of the players from Atalanta were in tears.
The small team which originated from northern city of Bergamo has only won the Italian Open once and that too was back in 1963.
As for Lazio it was their 7th Italian Cup win which ended Juventus’ four years domination of the tournament.
