After Ballon d’Or became the winner of the Ballon d’Or for the 6th time in his career so far, he said that he is far from being over
Messi said at the awards ceremony after winning the Ballon d’Or award, “I hope to continue this for a long time. I have realized that I am very lucky, despite the fact that retirement will come one day. It will be a difficult day for me. Still, I have many of the good years ahead of me. Time tends to go by very quickly so I still want to enjoy football with my family.”
Although Messi won his 6th career’ Ballon d’Or award, it was the first one for the captain of the USWNT Megan Rapinoe.
Megan said in her recorded video message, “I cannot believe that I am winning such a great award in this field. It has really been an incredible year for me.”
Previously in his career, Messi has won the Ballon d’Or award in the years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015.
The runner up for this award this year was Virgil van Dijk, the defender of Liverpool, following him in the polls was Cristiano Ronaldo, who also has won 5 of these awards so far in his career.
For the last 10 years, the awards were won only by Messi or Ronaldo but last year the stalemate broke with Luka Nordic winning the first of his career.
However, Messi again made a comeback on his amazing performance this year as he scored 36 goals in the last season on his way to win the 10th Spanish League title along with becoming the top scorer of Champions League.
Earlier in September, Messi also won the FIFA award beating Van Dijk by the edge.
