The Statuary night’s main fight at The O2 held between Vasiliy Lomachenko and Like Campbell for the title of WBA Lightweight belt ended with Lomachenko’s victory.
Lomachenko was able to defeat his opponent with a unanimous decision verdict but Luke Campbell was also worthy of praise for standing toe to toe against one of the finest fighters on the pallet. Still, Campbell’s durability was not able to stop Lomachenko from getting the WBC Lightweight title and add it to his already won WBO and WBA lightweight titles along with a treasure trove of the world title for three weights and gold medals from Olympic Games in a row.
Still, Lomachenko was made to work seriously for this fight which also happened to be an amazing one of his career yet. This fight caused Lomachenko to be raised to the standard of Muhammad Ali as per Bob Arum who had promoted both these boxers with a time of 53 years apart.
Lomachenko assessed his fellow Olympic champion during the first round and then asserted his dominance with an aggressive stance and his cuffing left hand.
Lomachenko’s jab started to seep through Campbell’s defenses but he remained intact.
Campbell suffered a left hand to head that rocked him during the 3rd but again was able to stand his ground firmly. Campbell then delivered some body shots and Lomachenko also replied back in the same kind.
During the 5th, Lomachenko came close to winning the match as he stung Campbell with his body shot but the bell range in time to save him. At that point, Campbell was struggling to get on his feet.
Campbell took a breather in the break and then again landed a body shot to Lomachenko in the 6th but Lomachenko also shook him with a blow to the head.
The stunning moment of the whole fight was during the 7th when Lomachenko was caught by Campbell’s right hook and was hurt badly. Lomachenko needed a few moments to hold his ground but was still able to end the round being dominant with his right hook shot.
Lomachenko unleashed a flurry of body shots in the 9th and tried to knockout Campbell in the 4th but Campbell was able to stay in the round due to Lomachenko bundling his opponent over with his feet.
Still, in the end, Lomachenko was given the unanimous decision points win form the scores of 119-108, 119-108 and 118-109 to extend his career record to 14-1.
