Marieke Vervoort, Paralympic gold medalist ends her life via euthanasia

Marieke Vervoort, the Paralympian from Belgium went ahead to end her life through euthanasia.

The 40 years old Marieke Vervoort was suffering from a certain degenerative muscle disease that was incurable. Despite her health, Marieke Vervoort won the Gold and Silver medals at the 2012 London Paralympics. Marieke Vervoort also went on to win 2 more medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The disease of Marieke Vervoort caused her to suffer from constant pain, paralysis of the legs, seizures along with uneasiness that barely allowed her to sleep.

Euthanasia is legal in the country of Belgium and the papers for this were signed by Marieke Vervoort back in 2008. These papers would allow doctors to end her life at some point in time.

During the start of the Rio Olympics, Marieke Vervoort said that she was heavily considering euthanasia and that playing in the 2016’s Olympics was her last wish.

Marieke Vervoort said to reporters, “You have to live day by day to enjoy these little moments in life. When the day comes that I have more of the bad days than the good days, then I have my papers for euthanasia ready. But, the time is not here yet.”

A stamen from the home city of Marieke Vervoort called Deist said that Marieke Vervoort responded to the choice she made of euthanasia on Tuesday evening and also stated that the book of condolences is now available at the Town Hall.
