The Saturday night boxing match for the WBO Super Lightweight title ended with a unanimous points win of Maurice Hooker over Mikkel LesPierre.
LesPierre was floored down by the WBO champion Hooker in the ninth round as he controlled the fight through the match to win by the scores of 120-107, 119-108 and 118-109. The fight was held at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona.
Hooker had to struggle making the weight limit on Friday but he still declares that he will defend his title against the British fighter Jack Catterall.
Hooker showed his dominance from the early rounds as he shot a stiff jab to have a sizeable reach advantage. He later added on more power to his jabs.
LesPierre, who was badly hurt, sustained the hurtful punches from Hooker until the fifth round valiantly but he then countered with a right hand to trouble the champ.
A stoppage win for Hooker was likely in the ninth round after LesPierre dropped to the floor by a body shot. However, the Brooklyn native fighter valiantly held his ground until the round ended and fought bravely against Hooker.
