Meet the FPL blogger bowling at the T20 World Cup
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Brad Currie may be preparing to take the new ball for Scotland against England at the T20 World Cup, but a quick glance at his social media bio reveals numbers that have nothing to do with cricket. On X, his profile reads: “21/22 OR: 1k. 22/23 OR: 1.8k.” Those figures are not bowling averages or strike rates — they represent his impressive overall rankings in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Away from the cricket field, Currie is widely known online as ‘FPL Schofield’, where he runs a popular account offering advice, strategy breakdowns, and transfer tips for one of the world’s most played online football games. With nearly 13 million participants globally, Fantasy Premier League has become a phenomenon, and Currie once ranked as high as 30th in the world — an extraordinary achievement in such a competitive space.

While many professional athletes unwind with video games or streaming shows, Currie spends his downtime analyzing fixtures, planning transfers, and mapping out chip strategies. He admits his iPad notes are filled with transfer plans and rotation schedules. His YouTube feed is dominated by FPL content, and even his TikTok and X timelines are flooded with football analysis. The obsession, he jokes, is not always appreciated at home — especially by his girlfriend.

Now 27, Currie faces a unique challenge as Scotland compete in India: the five-and-a-half-hour time difference from the United Kingdom. Premier League matches kick off in the early hours, and FPL deadlines often fall late at night. Keeping up with games and highlights has been difficult. He describes the situation as “absolute torture,” struggling to stream matches or catch recap clips while balancing World Cup commitments. At least the FA Cup schedule offers some relief.

For a long time, his cricketing colleagues were unaware of his fantasy alter ego. But the secret is out. Teammates and even opponents now approach him for advice. Among them is Sean Hunt, the Sussex bowler who once sent Currie a screenshot of his FPL squad before a match against West Indies, asking for guidance. Hunt jokingly followed up one message with, “What do you think of my team? Oh, and well bowled.”

When pressed for advice for the remainder of the FPL campaign, Currie quickly outlines a detailed chip strategy: dead-end into Gameweek 31, wildcard in 32, bench boost in 33, and deploy the triple captain chip whenever it feels right. For seasoned FPL managers, this is familiar tactical language; for outsiders, it might sound like a code.

Despite his fantasy football passion, Currie’s primary focus remains cricket. He is expected to open the bowling for Scotland in a crucial T20 World Cup clash against England — a match loaded with narrative and family connections.

Brad is the younger brother of Scott Currie, who was called up by England last year. Both brothers qualify for Scotland through their Scottish father, though they grew up on England’s south coast. Brad, a left-arm seamer, studied sports psychology at Bournemouth University — a discipline that now shapes his mental approach to elite competition.

A lifelong football fan, Brad happened to be at the Vitality Stadium when AFC Bournemouth recorded a dramatic 3-2 win over Liverpool. During that thrilling encounter, Amine Adli scored a 95th-minute winner. Amid the celebrations, Currie received a call from Scotland coach Owen Dawkins informing him that he had been selected for the World Cup squad. He suspected the reason for the call but delayed answering, worried about losing signal inside the stadium.

When he eventually returned the call, Dawkins jokingly referenced the football result before delivering the life-changing news. Currie playfully responded that he hoped the coach would not spoil his mood. Instead, it became one of the most memorable days of his career.

Scotland’s route to the tournament was anything but straightforward. After narrowly missing qualification behind the Netherlands and Italy, their hopes were revived when Bangladesh opted to boycott the event. The weeks leading up to confirmation were filled with uncertainty, speculation, and conflicting reports. Even players within the official Scotland group chat were unsure about what would happen.

Currie recalls asking coaching staff during a Sussex indoor training session whether the rumors were true. It felt surreal to hear external voices claiming Scotland were heading to the World Cup while players themselves awaited formal confirmation.

As a county professional with Sussex, Currie benefited from maintaining winter training. However, managing workload is critical for bowlers. Scotland’s calendar shifted dramatically — from Cricket World Cup League 2 commitments at the end of March to a T20 World Cup in India at the beginning of February. That abrupt transition left little room for over-preparation.

Currie explains that cramming extra training sessions would have been counterproductive. Unlike revising for an exam, physical conditioning cannot simply be accelerated without risking injury. His girlfriend’s family questioned whether he should be training more, but Currie understood the importance of pacing.

There was also speculation surrounding his brother Scott’s eligibility. Having been selected by England for a tour of Ireland — though not making his debut — some wondered whether he could switch allegiance back to Scotland. However, a single appearance as a substitute fielder ruled him out under eligibility regulations.

Brad admits he felt a sinking feeling when he texted his brother to confirm. Several sibling pairs are currently competing internationally, including the Manenti and Mosca brothers for Italy and the Sheikh brothers for Nepal. A Currie sibling showdown would have added another compelling storyline — though perhaps at a financial cost to their parents, who might have had to fund additional travel.

Now, attention turns firmly to Scotland’s showdown with England. England’s defeat to West Indies has made the upcoming match a must-win encounter for both teams. The two sides previously met at the 2024 T20 World Cup, when Scotland’s batting set England a challenging target of 110 from 10 overs before rain intervened, leaving the outcome unresolved.

Currie embraces the underdog mindset but refuses to be intimidated. Drawing from his sports psychology background, he approaches matches with belief and composure. He acknowledges England’s depth — noting that Adil Rashid bats at number 11 and boasts 10 first-class centuries, while Currie himself does not yet have a double-digit first-class score. Still, he remains unfazed.

England must deal with travel demands, while Scotland have already acclimatized with two games at Eden Gardens. Currie is focused on execution rather than reputation. “I have learned to fear no one,” he says, emphasizing that elite competition requires confidence.

Whether offering FPL advice online or preparing to bowl in a World Cup fixture, Brad Currie balances two competitive worlds with impressive composure. On Saturday, however, fantasy football will take a back seat. His attention will be fixed on delivering with the new ball in one of the biggest matches of his career.
